How to Create a Domain Name that Shines

When it comes time to find the right name for your website, blog or information products it’s so easy to get a creative block. Some people have a way with words and can come up with catchy, punchy domain names, but most can’t.

Your domain name says a lot about your business, your brand and your products. When done correctly the name will tell people what you have to offer and will help them to decide if they are interested in looking further.

You want it to match your marketing message and it must represent the content you are presenting.

There is a simple formula for choosing a domain name that shines. I want to share with you some simple steps for generating domain names that people want to click.

Choose 10 Top Keywords

Write down10 keywords or phrases that best describe your business, your products and your services. By using keywords in your domain name you are letting the name speak for your business. They will know right away what you are offering just by the name. Once you have this list, pair them or add prefixes and suffixes to create good word combinations. For example, if you’re launching an organic related domain, you might start with words like ‘organic, healthy, natural, fresh, green" then play around until you can find a good match.

Make the Domain Unique and Original

Before you get started using your name you need to make sure it is unique and original. Do a search to see if someone else has already registered the domain name for their business. Never choose a domain name that are hyphenated or misspelled versions of an already established domain. By being unique your domain name will stand out and wont get mistaken for another.

Make it Easy to Type

Don’t diminish your branding and marketing by make it hard for people to reach your site. Make it easy by creating a name that people don’t have to think about how something is spelt, is too long and uses words that are not generally used.If you can type your name easily then go for it.

Make it Easy to Remember

People share sites by word-of-mouth using social media sites such as Facebook and having a name that is relatively short is easy to remember and easy to pass on. The longer the name the harder it is for people to remember. As an added bonus, the shorter the name the easier it is to fit on other media such as business cards and can made it more search engine friendly. Avoid hyphens and numbers as these are difficult to remember and share.

Make it Reflect Your Business

Your domain name identifies you on the Internet and when someone visits your site they are expecting to see exactly what the domain name says it is.  It should instantly and accurately tell the user what type of content that might be found there. Going back to the example of "organic" if your visitors sees pictures and content on "racing cars" when they are expecting to see "organic remedies" they will click off and never return.

Set Yourself Apart with a Brand

Your unique domain name is the gateway to your ‘brand’. Make sure your brand represents your unique marketing message and presents your business in a professional manner.

A good domain name is part of your marketing strategy and plays an important role when people discover, talk about or search for a website. A great brand establishes you in the marketplace.

If the name you have chosen is not in use then you need to register it before someone else. If the domain name is already taken, you will need to choose an alternative domain name that will describe your business using keywords. Using keywords will increase your customers and your sales.
