How To Write An Effective Tagline

Today, I want to talk about the importance of including an effective tagline on your portfolio website, but first it’s important to know what a tagline is…

It’s a short phrase that captures what you do and what benefit you provide to your clients.

One of the most popular taglines out there is "Just Do It"… and I bet you know what company uses it.

Here are some tips for writing your own tagline that will make your company as memorable to your clients as Nike:

  • Keep it short – Under 10 words is best. The shorter it is, the easier it is to remember.
  • Be original – You want your tagline to be so specific that it can only apply to your business. If you can take your tagline and apply it to other businesses, then it’s not original enough.
  • Make it make sense – If your tagline is confusing or just doesn’t make sense, it won’t be very effective.
  • Be memorable – You want your clients to remember your tagline. Do you recognize these popular taglines?:
    o    You get fresh, hot pizza delivered to your door in 30 minutes or less — or it’s free.
    o    15 minutes could save you 15 percent or more on car insurance
    o    The milk chocolate melts in your mouth, not in your hand
    o    The night time, coughing, achy, sniffling, stuffy head, fever, so you can rest medicine.
