How To Write Compelling Copy-Keep It Simple

What’s the main reason why you write blog posts, a marketing email, a sales letter, or a tutorial and put it on your website?

To get what you have written read. Makes sense doesn’t it. Your headline, your graphics, your fonts, your bullet points and the rest of your copy are the icing on the cake. Once you have engaged your reader and they have got past your first sentence.

When Joe Sugarman shared his secret for becoming a great copywriter that every element of copy has just one purpose – to get the first sentence read, he opened the doors to  the way the present day copywriter performs their craft.

It doesn’t matter how complicated you want to make it the main reason you write something is to get someone to read it.

Carrying on in the same vein… the purpose of the first sentence is to get the second sentence read. And so on down the rest of your copy to your offer and a sale.

This is a great way to look at writing. To make each sentence lead on to the next one. To persuade the reader to do what you want them to do.

You now have a simple framework to drill down deeper and are in a better position to fully appreciate the techniques that apply to all the other elements of your copy.

You can now see why a strong, compelling headline, focusing on the benefit to the reader, making promises that you later fulfil and why you must backup what you have said is crucial.

Your primary aim when writing is to get the reader to read one sentence at a time. To make each sentence so strong that they want to read the next, then the next and so on right down to where you want them to take some sort of action… to buy what you are selling.

It is that simple. You would’ve heard of the KISS principle. Keep it  Simple Stupid. Good copywriting is written in clear, concise, simple words that get your point across. Another way to look at this is to talk to the one person who you have defined as your target market. Start a conversation with them, connect with them and draw them into your story. Once they are in you have achieved your goal and that is to get them to take the desired action.

Lesson 2 will look at How to Write Headlines That Work. Those headlines that grab attention!
