5 Important Rules in Website Design

When it comes to website design your website is the face of your business, attention should be paid to every little detail to make sure it performs the purpose you have designed it for. Here are five important rules of thumb to observe to make sure your website performs well and your readers do not leave it in a hurry.

#1 Do not use splash pages

Splash pages normally have an image with words like “click here to enter” or “welcome” and are very annoying as they provide no perceived value. Your visitors want to and should land on your home page, or another page, that offers them something for free and provides them with solutions to their problems.

Do not give your visitors a reason to click the “back” button and leave your website, never to return.

#2 Do not use excessive banner advertisements

As the Internet has grown more and more banner advertisements are being put on websites.  They can be on all four corners of a website. They also flash in, flash out, fade in and fade out. If you use excessive banner advertising on your website your visitors will click the “X” button and leave.

Instead place your banner advertisements strategically and discretely. You can also weave your own links and affiliate links in your website content. That way your visitors will not feel like they are being sold to.

#3 Have a simple and clear navigation

Provide a simple and clear navigation menu that can be used by a very young child. When people read, generally it is from left to right. Place your navigation menu near the top of your website and running from left to right. Menu bars on the left or right-hand side of your website is not ideal as it can confuse the reader.

One way to keep your visitor to your site is to have five to six menu buttons in a row. Use multi-tiered drop-down menus cautiously. I suggest two-three drop-downs per top-level menu. Any more than that and visitors can get lost very easily.

#4 Have a clear indication of where the user is

When visitors are engrossed in reading content on your website, you want to make sure they know exactly which part of the site they are at that precise moment. When they go to the top of your website and your simple navigation menu bar is there they will be able to find another page, your home page or your contact page easily and not “jump ship”.

A visitor who stays on your website is very likely going to perform an action that you have asked them to do. This could be that they purchase your product or service or contact you.

#5 Avoid using looping audio on your site

To get your visitor to stay a long time at your site, reading your content and taking action, having an audio looping on and off your site is an absolute no-no. This is one sure way of losing visitors and therefore customers.

A simple, clear navigable website allows visitors to stay, read and take action.
