Guest Posting: What Google Thinks About It!

I just watched a YouTube video by Matt Cutts about what he thinks, and perhaps Google, on guest blogging. Currently guest blogging is the favorite activity for website owners to acquire links to their sites and has been happening since the dawn of the Internet.

Today there are many blogs that have content that is not as original as it should be. Articles are being spun and submitted to many sites in order to gain backlinks, hoping that the big G will up the page ranking of that site. What is happening is that these links ‘are less likely to be counted’ by Google.

Does this type of link strategy work? Well perhaps it has in the past but listening to Matt I don’t think this will last much longer. What Google wants is high quality content that is written by either a professional writer or the owner of the blog who has knowledge and insight to give to their readers.

The other side of the coin is that if you are doing lots of guest blogging there is an assumption that you are spinning your articles and likewise so are the guest bloggers on your site. This would indicate that you are not in control of your own content and that would indicate low quality. This is what they would consider to be spammy articles and could affect your site’s reputation.

Google is willing to take action if they see low quality blogging, or guest blogging and using this as a primary linking acquisition strategy should be used with caution.

The length of the article is very important as well. This has slowly increased over the years from 200 words to the bar minimum of 350 words and now my guess would be in the range of 500-750 (or higher) words per article.

This doesn’t mean you just fill the page with fluff, each sentence needs to bring to the reader some insight and knowledge that you have and that will inspire your reader to comment and share. The backlinks that you can get are when your article is from your heart, your ideas, your pen. Put some effort into it and say something original.

Don’t think “It’s called guest blogging, it must be good!” Always as a site owner you have to think about the quality of the content, the amount of words that it has but most of all are your readers going to gain valuable information, are they going to be happy on that page.

Another interesting comment he made was the mention of three top blogging writers. These three bloggers had Google+ ratings in the thousands. What does this mean to you? I see it that the more you use Google’s features the more Google will look favourably on you. In other word don’t beat it join it!

Think of it this way.. By all means have guest bloggers and be a guest blogger, just ensure that the content you write and receive is of the highest quality it can be. If it’s your site, own it, live it, believe in it.
